A Complete Reimagination of a Burlington Kitchen

When PMD’s Senior Designer Kimberly Smeding was brought in to renovate a dated Burlington kitchen, her main goal - aside from making the space more beautiful - was to increase the functionality as much as possible. This meant taking on some construction aspects, including raising a bank of windows and recessing support beams in the ceiling.

In order to maximize the flow and functionality of the kitchen, raising the bank of windows in the former dining room was important. This allowed Kimberly to extend the length of the kitchen and run lower cabinets and the countertop along the entire back wall. This meant new window openings, new windows, and new trim, but it was a very worthwhile investment in order to gain more cabinet storage and usable counter space.

The design direction for this home was light and bright. Kimberly implemented a neutral colour palette with a variety of tones and textures in order to create visual interest. By using a glossy, artisan tile for the backsplash, it allowed the natural light throughout the space to reflect and keep things feeling warm. The plastered hood provided a textured element to break up the tile, and the use of white oak on the island and floating shelves brought in the classic West Coast element that PMD is known for.

Taking things a step further, Kimberly selected different millwork profiles to elevate the overall design. She mixed flat panel with shaker style, incorporated a thin bead on the doors and drawer fronts, and recessed some of the cabinet hardware while using traditional knobs on others.

By taking into account what her clients needed in the new space, reimagining the overall flow, and reconfiguring the layout, Kimberly was able to deliver a beautiful heart of the home that will function optimally for this family for many years to come.
